New year, new gigs!

We're sorting out the gig calendar for the upcoming months. First up, a private party down in London for a good friend of the Scissors on 21 January;
Then in March we're back at our local Man On The Moon (10 March, other acts TBC),
and on 31 March we're excited to be playing at the new John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, with the fantastic Voodoo Trombone Quartet.

We're really excited to be playing at Ultrazang this Friday (4 March, PJ McGinty's in Ipswich), with Benjamin Bloom and the awesome (and loud) Gunslinger! Gunslinger is the new project from Alan Davey, former singer/bassist with the legendary Hawkwind! Benjamin Bloom is the former lead singer with Rosalita, and his new band is both melodic and theatrical. Promises to be a great night!

If you can't make it, we're also supporting Benjamin Bloom the following week when his tour hits Cambridge Haymakers...

Another productive session last night working on our 'Afternoons' EP. Put finished guitar and vocals on the title track, and we're really pleased with the results so far! Toby Scissor was still full of winter cold but powered valiantly through his parts fulled by copious quantities of 'medicinal' Chilean red wine.

'Daylight Cinema' reviewed in Music Maker magazine

'Daylight cinema' is The Scissors' debut offering and has a very late 70's early 80's new wave feel about it. Plenty of energy, songs short and sweet, snappy half snarled vocals over stinging riffs and choppy rhythms, the occasional ska backbeat with psychedelic keyboards swirling behind the mix. Dislodged in time, yet a relevant retro hybrid for the present day, The Scissors clearly have their own sound but the musical references ring loud and clear and the band come over as an amalgam of so many who were around at that time, echoes of The Clash, The Teardrop Explodes, and Echo and the Bunnymen, and even touches of the Doors to go back further – it's quite a mix.

The Scissors - 'hats on' at the Band Competition Grand Final!

BBC Cambridgeshire got a bit confused by our headgear with this review (it was actually guitarist Toby wearing the tricorn hat...)

The Scissors
The penultimate band of the bill and it's the turn of 'The Scissors' to take to the stage. The only band to consciously change the aesthetics of their instruments, the band have a certain theatricality about them, not least because the members appear to take on the role of numerous protagonists with every performance.

This time saw the turn of the bassist to change persona, performing under the guise of a pirate, with the aid of a hat that refused to leave his head throughout the performance; a remarkable feat considering the enthusiasm of his response to the adoring applause of the audience. The Scissors own a defined look on a stage this size, and own a certain naivety that remains appealing to a vast majority of the spectators, and ultimately saw the band sail through a mid tempo set without any notable threats.

The Scissors (Winners of Heat 2)
Aesthetically, there was always going to be one band that stood out from the sizeable crowd, and they perform under the guise of ‘The Scissors’.

Comparable to ‘Panic at the Disco!’ due to their apparent involvement in the revival of Parisian theatricality, but resounding within the boundaries of a far more credible genre, ‘The Scissors’ were as endearing as they come. They had the strongest songs of the heat, when originality, crowd response and the tightness with which they played were considered, and when accompanied by the atmosphere created by the band, made for an irresistible live show, that when performed on a bigger stage, would feel at home within the boundaries of a stage production.
The Scissors were the most popular band to play thus far in the heat, eventually winning the beer cheer and overall on points. Full review here

The Scissors are through to the grand final of this year's Cambridge Band Competition, which will take place on Friday 15 May at Cambridge Corn Exchange, Wheeler Street.

Heat Two saw the Scissors compete alongside The Running Mayfairs, The Scene is Dead and Villa Savoye.

We are very sorry to announce the cancellation of this gig, due to a last minute decision made by the providers of the venue, Cambridge Union Society.We are very disappointed by this, especially given the hard work that had gone into preparing for and organising the event, and we would like to be able to pass on the apologies of Cambridge Union Society for the inconvenience and disappointment this has caused - but we can't, because they haven't offered an apology in any shape or form.
You'll just have to make do with ours in the meantime.
Our heartfelt thanks go to Jo from Acoustic Stage, The Buffalo Club and everyone else who tried so hard (but sadly in vain) to find an alternative venue at the last minute.

Four bands, four quid!

The Scissors' first gig of the new year will be on Friday 16 January at Cambridge University Student Union Bar (9a Bridge Street, just behind the Round Church). It's £4 entry (or £3 for CUSU, and free for CUS members) - for which you get four top bands, and drinks at student bar prices!
Also on the bill are Buffalo Club, T.O.Y. Radio and Horseman Shakes and the Draymen. Should be a good night!
Cambridge's popular community FM station 209Radio will be giving it a mention, and playing a Scissor track or two beforehand, so listen out for that too...

The Scissors spent yesterday (20 December) having a very productive recording session, engineered by Chris Pepper. In eight busy hours, fuelled by Dr Pepper, chilli cheese snacks and Cadbury's chocolate fingers we got Skylon and Your House Has Ghosts in the can. Eating the chilli snacks with chocolate fingers together really worked...

The Scissors at The Alma, 29 November

We had a great fun night on Saturday, at The Alma (a little treasure of a pub tucked away in Russell Court, off Hills Road). The Brackets and Umbrella Assassins played some mighty stuff too, cheers guys! The Brackets kindly lent the use of their monster bass rig, which probably shook the foundations of the surrounding buildings a bit, but was very satisfying to play through. Can't beat a good rumble.

The bar ran out of rum though...

The Scissors in zombie horror movie!

The Scissors have risen from the grave (or at least their rehearsal space) to get involved with Amy Leigh Hawes' no-budget movie Zombie Daytrip!
As well as providing a recording of 'Your house has ghosts' (a new version of which is up on our myspace) for the soundtrack, Stewart Scissor got all zombified and spent a day lurching around Cambridge trying to scare passers-by. So what's different there?
Pictures of the undead fun can be seen on BBC Cambridgeshire.

The Scissors new rehearsal space

Having been thrown out of our Scissors' Secret Laboratory(TM), The Scissors have finally got a new rehearsal space. But it's top secret, a bit like Tracy Island only with more shelf-space (and quite good acoustics)
Now the action playsets are sorted, maybe some Scissors 4" poseable action figures? Moveable parts and accessories sold separately.
Please post your ideas for playsets, outfits, etc!

Now we can gear up for Sunday 21 September, playing at the Portland Arms with Dirty Royals and Aidy. The fun starts about 7.30, so be there!

Portland Arms, 5 July review

We got the glo-sticks out again for Saturday's Portland gig with Cosy Cosy! David Bridge was there, and posted this review on his site.

'...take a slice of Clash, mix in some apocalyptic circus-sideshow keyboards + whack in some lyrics full of nostalgia & dread for good measure... The set was balanced well, building it up before tearing it down with the anthemic "Lucy For London" and "Gone". All in all an enjoyable outing, I thoroughly recommend checking The Scissors out if they're in your area.'

Wow that was fun! And fast! A quick run through a couple of songs to warm up and set levels, and we were off, tearing through our current set (some songs we did a couple of takes of to nail 'em right), as live as nature intended. Mulletboy was a great place to record (having a working toilet was a novelty compared with some places we've rehearsed), with great sound, nice gear and enthusiastic engineering! Scissors at the Soul Tree, supporting Make Model

Bloody good fun, despite a couple of technical hitches (Toby yanked his guitar lead out of the amp in a moment of sheer exuberance. Got it back in again, noise happily restored)...

Enjoyed the other bands muchly also - Frank Hamilton's wry observational songwriting; The Corrections strange art-pop take on stuff (their closer 'OCD' kicks ass); and Make Model proved great live, even better then their studio tracks promised.

Talking to Lewis (MM's guitar/vox), was disappointed to learn that their name is not in fact taken from the instructions on an old Airfix kit, but is actually a comment on society's obsession with technology, inbuilt obsolescence, and those toy cars you get at garages in big multipacks (I might have made that last one up.)

Scissors in action at Cambridge Barfly...

Tim (www.nowitson.co.uk) reviewed us, "first up the local band, The Scissors. In front of a reasonable crowd they seemed a little overawed by the opportunity to play their brand of alternative pop, their sound augmented by an organ to good effect. They play a handful of self-penned songs and as their confidence on stage grows, they show enough promise to keep an eye open for them on the Cambridge circuit."

...which was nice. Overawed? Maybe a little, it was a hungry old beast of a crowd! We enjoyed it though!
